Special Olympics ‘Flame of Hope’ to Travel Through Calgary, February 27

CALGARY—Calgary-based Special Olympics athlete, David Hall, will carry the ‘Flame of Hope’ through Calgary towards the Opening Ceremony for the 2024 Special Olympics Canada Winter Games, February 27, as part of the Law Enforcement Torch Run’s Final Leg presented by TD.

The 33-year-old Hall, who has been a Special Olympics athlete for 22 years and is currently attending Mount Royal University, will join Law Enforcement officers from Alberta on Tuesday for the Final Leg in hopes of positively impacting Calgarians by raising awareness about intellectual disability and promoting inclusion in our community as the ‘Flame of Hope’ makes stops throughout the city.

The ‘Flame of Hope’ will head to Centre Court at Chinook Centre near TD for a community celebration at 12:15 p.m. before returning to Hall’s former school , William Aberhart High School, at 1:45 p.m. Hall and the officers will stage at 7:15 p.m. with the ‘Flame of Hope’ at Olympic Plaza for its final march to the Opening Ceremony at Nutrien Western Event Centre where it will bring all 12 of Canada’s Provincial/Territorial Special Olympics Chapters together by lighting the TC Energy Cauldron to officially open the Games that are sure to showcase the very best of both the intellectual disability sport community and the city.

Opening Ceremony Presented by Calgary Flames Foundation The Opening Ceremony for the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Calgary 2024 presented by Calgary Flames Foundation will focus on highlighting Calgary’s classic Western hospitality while we celebrate and welcome Canada’s Special Olympics athletes to Calgary with high-energy music and performers including those from the National access Arts Centre, Chinook Line Dancers and Young Canadians. The memorable event will also share the beauty of our Indigenous people and communities in a celebration with dancers and drummers. Choreographed to create impactful moments between the athletes and local artists at the Opening Ceremony, performances are made possible through the support from Calgary Arts Development. The event will be streamed live to all Canadians at Special Olympic Canada's YouTube Channel
