Cenovus Energy provides an Elevated Experience for Our Athletes’ Family and Friends

February 13, 2024

Cenovus Energy, one of our platinum sponsors, is gearing up to kick off the Special Olympics Calgary 2024 Family & Friends Program presented by Cenovus Energy on February 28, 2024. That evening, families and friends of the athletes will gather at Studio Bell to celebrate and share refreshments while wandering through the 450-year story of music in Canada exhibit.

The staff at Cenovus are thrilled to be hosting the Family & Friends reception and are looking forward to honouring those who have played a key role in supporting the athletes.

“The Special Olympics has been a blessing for my family. My daughter has been involved with the organization since she was 12 years old, participating in bowling, snowshoeing, swimming, bocce and other sports,” says Roxi Smysniuk, Team Lead, Cash – Receivables & Payments at Cenovus and member of the enABLE@Cenovus inclusion & diversity network. “She is now a confident, happy and well-rounded woman, and so it’s particularly meaningful that the company I work for is sponsoring the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games.”

“We are proud to support the Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Calgary 2024 Family & Friends Program,” says Wafa Kadri, Manager, Social Investment at Cenovus. “At Cenovus, we believe that sport teaches valuable life lessons and fosters inclusivity. We think it’s important to not only celebrate and recognize the athletes, but also the dedicated people behind them who helped to support their journey to the National Games. We are excited to welcome everyone to Calgary and the Games.”

With 700 people registered to attend, the Family & Friends reception is at capacity. Other perks of registering for the Family & Friends Program include official accreditation with reserved seating for the opening ceremony and a welcome package.

“The Family & Friends Program presented by Cenovus Energy celebrates the dedicated people behind every Special Olympics athlete. Their encouragement, support, and personal sacrifice have culminated in getting these incredible athletes to the National Games,” said Cheryl Bernard, Co-Chair Games Organizing Committee, Special Olympics Canada Winter Games Calgary 2024. “The Program is a wonderful addition to these Games. We believe everyone has greatness, but someone has to give them the opportunity. Thank you to Cenovus for giving the more than 800 athletes representing the 12 Special Olympics provincial chapters and territories an opportunity to have this life changing competitive experience, while also providing us all with an evening to celebrate and express our gratitude for the immense group of supporters behind them.”
